Sweden is a country deeply engaged in globalisation, and it is therefore profoundly affected by geopolitical trends shifting towards increased polarisation, complexity, and uncertainty. These trends, which in some ways signify a break with globalisation as we know it, underscore the need for a renewed discussion on the fundamental values of international academic cooperation and for charting a path in the international context.
There is a concern that framing research as a security issue may undermine global research collaboration and hamper the rapid development of science seen in recent decades. This happens at a time when international academic cooperation is needed more than ever to solve the global challenges faced by the world. Thus, the Advisory Board has been tasked by STINT to address the rationale for international cooperation in an increasingly polarised world.
The Advisory Board’s report will be presented and discussed at a seminar on 19 March. Dr Mats Persson, the Swedish Minister for Education, will participate in the seminar and provide commentary on the report. The Vice-Chancellor of Lund University and Presidents of Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University will participate in a panel discussion.
The Advisory Board consists of
– Dr Agneta Bladh, fmr Chair, Swedish Research Council
– Prof. Bertil Andersson, fmr President, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
– Prof. Jason E. Lane, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Association of System Heads (NASH), USA
– Dr Nelson Torto, fmr Executive Director, the African Academy of Sciences, Kenya, and now Senior Government Official, Government of Botswana, Botswana
– Prof. William Brustein, fmr Vice President for Global Strategies and International Affairs, West Virginia University, USA.
