On 18 November 2024, STINT and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) organised a workshop on responsible internationalisation and research security at House of Sweden in Washington, DC. This workshop followed up on the meeting held in Stockholm in November 2022.
The workshop focused on how research actors can cooperate to promote internationalisation in an increasingly complex world, characterised by geopolitical friction and the greater need to solve global challenges. The session was divided into three connected themes: securitisation; promoting research collaboration; and global challenges. Discussions were lively and participants had several examples and challenges to talk about. STINT also provided suggestions on structuring efforts to promote responsible internationalisation. The workshop had three main goals:
- Creating greater understanding among research actors, funders, and other support actors for the challenges the current geopolitical landscape pose to international research collaboration.
- Proposing how responsible internationalisation and research security may be promoted in future.
- Creating a transatlantic network for promoting responsible internationalisation and research security.
Around thirty participants from the USA, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and France attended the workshop. The participants represented universities, research funders, public agencies, and embassies.
