At this webinar, Jacob Paulsen, former Science and Innovation Counsellor at the Swedish Embassy in Brazil, will guide you through a recently published STINT Outlook report on Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of higher education and research in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, highlighting the significant transformations these countries have undergone in recent years. It discusses the historical context, higher education policy development, the political landscape, and the strong research areas and infrastructures that have emerged in these countries.

The report highlights the strong research areas in these countries, such as Argentina’s focus on nuclear science, agriculture and space activities, Brazil’s leadership in material science (aided by the SIRIUS synchrotron light source) and biomedical research, and Chile’s advancements in astronomy and climate sciences. Additionally, formalised scientific collaborations with Sweden are discussed which have enriched the research landscape in these nations.

In summary, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, despite facing distinct challenges shaped by their political contexts, have made significant advances in higher education and research.

The emphasis is on giving external observers and potential future research partners basic insight into these countries’ systems. Current national investments and the focus of these countries’ public sectors regarding their research and innovation systems are introduced, as are the latest trends based on budgets.

The aim of this report and webinar is to generate interest in and increase knowledge of international collaboration based on the strengths and challenges the research funding actors in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile have identified and are addressing. We look forward to lively discussion of the opportunities Sweden may identify in collaboration with these countries.
